Area of Expertise

Obesity

Obesity is a multifactorial disease and the control of environmental and hormonal factors is necessary to combat it. Excess weight can be linked to the person's genetic heritage, bad lifestyle habits or, for example, endocrine dysfunctions. The treatment guided by the endocrinologist avoids associated diseases, such as diabetes, in addition to preventing a series of complications, such as cardiovascular and orthopedic ones.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that is caused by insulin malfunctioning in your body or its scarce production. Insulin is an important hormone that regulates glucose in our blood and helps replenish energy for our body. Some specific symptoms (excessive thirst, diuresis and hunger) and tests that point to excess glucose are indications that should be investigated by a specialist. If you are overweight, relatives with diabetes, hypertension or blood fat changes, it is important to follow up with an endocrinologist.

Thyroid Diseases

It is a fundamental gland for the proper functioning of organs and important functions of the body. Thyroid diseases are related to changes in its functions, by releasing hormones in excess (hyperthyroidism) or in insufficient quantity (hypothyroidism). Nodules or swelling of the neck; insomnia and changes in bowel rhythm; nervousness; heart acceleration; weight gain or loss; and excess heat or cold can reveal thyroid disorders.

Osteoporosis

It develops from genetic, nutritional and hormonal factors, as well as from diseases that compromise the skeleton and the chronic use of certain medications. Fractures are the end result of this disease that can go unnoticed for several years. An endocrinologist will be able to diagnose and indicate the most appropriate treatment.

Testosterone deficiency

During aging, there is a gradual decrease in testosterone levels. This can lead to the need for hormone replacement in a number of men, which must be evaluated by an endocrinologist. The most common symptoms that may suggest a decrease in hormone production are tiredness, decreased muscle strength, erectile dysfunction and reduced sexual interest.

Cholesterol and Triglyceride Changes

Life habits, wrong diet, genetic inheritance and some diseases can lead to increased cholesterol and triglycerides in adults and children. Blood tests can point to changes in levels and treatment by an endocrinologist will reduce the risk of possible cardiovascular complications, especially the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Healthy weight loss

Healthy weight loss consists of eating based on a balanced diet, with the intake of all food groups, maintaining certain limits, in addition to the practice of physical activities. In some cases, controlling your diet and performing physical activities may not be enough. The endocrinologist is able to check the multiple factors that regulate metabolism throughout the body to point out possible treatments focused on maintaining health in the first place.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

It is an endocrinological disease characterized by the formation of cysts in the ovaries that cause them to increase in size. PCOS is characterized by irregular menstruation, the occurrence of acne and the production of testosterone (male hormone). In extreme situations, it can lead to obesity and infertility.

Puberty Disorders

Children who develop breasts, testicles or pubic hair very early have some type of hormonal disorder and it is necessary to assess the origin of the problem. Adolescents who do not develop these characteristics also need evaluation and follow-up regarding possible hormonal dysfunction.

Diseases of the Adrenal Gland

Among the diseases associated with disturbances in the production of hormones from the adrenal or adrenal gland are Addison's Disease, Cushing's Syndrome and Pheochromocytoma. Reddish stretch marks, weight gain, high or low blood pressure, acne, excessive hair, precocious puberty and skin darkening are some symptoms associated with adrenal gland problems.

Pituitary Diseases

Caused by deficiency or excess gland function, one of the most common problems occurs when a tumor appears, usually benign. Among the most common symptoms are changes in vision, headaches, menstrual irregularities, sexual dysfunction. The treatment may eventually involve a surgical procedure or just the regulation of deficient or excess hormones with medication.

Menopause and Hormone Replacement

It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 and is confirmed 1 year after the last menstrual period. Menstruation stops because the ovaries stop producing hormones. It marks the end of a woman's reproductive years and is also known as "ovarian failure". The endocrinologist is able to indicate the need for adequate hormone replacement, made with hormones identical to those produced by the woman herself, which alleviates the discomfort and risks of this phase.
